Those questions will be answered when the teams do battle at the Glencoe Oval on Saturday in the cut-throat 1st semi-fi nal of the Mid South East Football League. It was only two years ago that the Tigers and the Eagles met in the equivalent fi nal at Nangwarry and it was a lopsided result. After an even first half, Hatherleigh conceded just one goal in the fi nal two quarters and cantered its way to a preliminary fi nal berth with a 53-point victory. That 2012 capitulation along with a 15-point defeat by Glencoe a year ago must be uppermost in the minds of Tantanoola players as they make the journey up the Mile Hill Road. Mind you, some in the league are claiming Saturday’s result is purely academic as the top two teams will play off in the grand fi nal. After a blip in 2013 when it missed the major round by percentage, league powerhouse and minor premier, Mount Burr is back in the mix. CUT-THROAT PRESSURE: Tantanoola coach, Jason Dawe will have his Tigers ready to pounce on Saturday. The Mozzies have won more premierships than any other MSEFL club and their golden run over the past fi ve completed seasons has netted them an additional three flags and a runner-up placing. The return of Ben Mules to the MSEFL has breathed fresh life into the competition and his Kalangadoo Magpies are the sentimental favourites for the fl ag. Back to Saturday and the Cut-throat pressure match meetings of the two teams in 2014 might show some clues to the outcome of the match. Tantanoola defeated Hatherleigh at home by 18-points in their fi rst meeting on April 5 but the tables were turned in the return bout on June 28. On that occasion, the difference was a whopping 44-points with the Tigers managing a meagre 2.3 (15). I think the winning edge will come Tantanoola’s way on Saturday as it has a more productive forward and Hatherleigh’s defence is unsettled. The Tigers will be looking to Glenn Gascoyne (48 goals in 2014), Robbie Versace (44) and Matt Pilmore (36) to do the bulk of the scoring. The trio will be looking to start the game well and so the fi rst quarter will be crucial. Eagles coach, Craig Skeer has shown that he is prepared to shift his defensive players around. For example, Dylan Clough was given a run in the reserves on July 26, Marcus Bennett has been used in attack in the past two matches and regular ruckman/forward Josh Wight has been successfully used in the last line of defence. At the other end of the fi eld, Hatherleigh has had trouble fi nding a spearhead in the past month.
