2 OPINION THERE are over 100 employees and managers of Millicent’s three regulated stores who are waiting to hear from Treasurer Rob Lucas about the possibility of two extra trading days in April. An application from the Millicent Business Community Association for permission for these shops to trade on Geltwood Market Day on April 7 and Easter Saturday is about to cross his desk. With just over a month to go, the staff of Woolworths, Target Country and Fosters Foodland need some certainty from the minister so they can plan their weekends in April. Not all 100 employees will be needed but OUR VIEW trade is set to be brisk on these two days when many tourists and day-trippers are about. The Shop Trading Hours Act of 1977 empowers Mr Lucas with the discretion to grant an exemption or otherwise. It is essential Mr Lucas gives his blessing to the extra trading as it is clearly what Millicent wants. The association has gone to extraordinary lengths to consult the community on the extra trading and not one person, business or organisation has opposed it. This is not surprising. In general, Millicent people do not want the larger shops to trade on Sundays or public holidays but exceptions for Easter Saturday and Geltwood Market Day are embraced. A prompt decision from Mr Lucas to endorse extra trading on Geltwood Market Day, in particular, would also be a welcome boost to the volunteer organisers. The Millicent Lions Club members have done a mighty job in recent years to expand the appeal of the market day and TALKING TO THE TIMES ABN: 65 007 614851 Published: Tuesday & Thursday Deadlines: Displays: 10am 2 days prior to publication Classifieds: 11am day prior to publication Copy: 5pm 2 days prior to publication General Manager: Dennis Jackson Phone: 8724 1505, Email: dennis@tbw.com.au Advertising: Tegan Pink Phone: 8724 1501, Email: ads@setimes.com.au Sales Supervisor: Melissa Prior Phone: 8724 1508, Email: melissa@tbw.com.au Editor: Brett Kennedy Email: editor@setimes.com.au Administration: Caroline Hammat Email: admin@setimes.com.au Responsibility for editorial comment is taken by Brett Kennedy, 81 Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier. The qualification required is merely to be a resident in that area for at least 30 days. Such provision is without precedent since voting for State and Federal elections requires the person to be an Australian citizen. Surely it is right and proper that this requirement apply to local government as well. It is considered a norm that only the members of the cricket club elect the club officials. If any non-Australian citizens wish to vote at council elections they should be encouraged to firstly become a citizen of Australia. Tasmania is the only other state to offer non-Australians enrolment for council elections. A campaign has been launched to amend the Local Government Act to make it mandatory to be an Australian citizen before voting at council elections. Without reflecting on any non-Australian, it is essentially a common-sense custom within Australia to permit only “members” to vote at such elections. Ken Grundy Naracoorte Have your say. The South Eastern Times values your opinion. If you have a view or wish to comment on any community issue we would like to hear from you. I AM writing to you regarding the proposed new amendments to the abortion laws. I am sure that no sane person would deny that a baby in its mother’s womb, which is one week from birth, is a person (child). Therefore, the proposed new laws, if passed, would be legalising the murder of children. True or not? This would then open up the way to pass euthanasia laws. Logically, if it is okay (legal) to kill people just before they come into this world, then it should be okay (legal) to kill those people who are about to leave this world. Beginning with that we could then follow Hitler’s plan of culling (murdering) different groups of people to purify our race. Please do not say that it would not happen. The truth of the matter is that we are already culling (murdering) Down syndrome children and others. It is time to stop. As a society we are accruing a debt before God which one day He will require us to pay. We need to repent. “Thou shalt not kill.” Pastor Robert Cotton, Mount Gambier Please write to: The Editor PO Box 22 Millicent SA 5280 Fax 8733 4341 Email: editor@setimes.com.au Preference will be given to letters less than 200 words. MARGARET HENNINK, Millicent I think it is a fantastic idea. ROMA PLOENGES, Millicent It would be good for the town BILL CHAPMAN, Millicent Because of Peter Seebohm, basketball is booming in Millicent and a WNBL game would be another feather in his cap. it has been re-badged as the Lions Family Fun Day. In a similar vein, the organisers of the Geltwood Craft Festival put in many hours to arrange workshops and displays which are at the heart of the event. The political stocks of Mr Lucas in Millicent plummeted in 2018 when he tried to deregulate shop trading across SA. If Mr Lucas had succeeded, one of Millicent’s three supermarkets would have closed. To win back support for the Liberals in Millicent on the eve of a Federal election, he should promptly allow for shopping on those two days in April.
